Patrick Shiroishi shares solo sax reverie “if only heaven would give me another ten years”

Patrick Shiroishi has shared a new single titled “if only heaven would give me another ten years” — the closing track from his forthcoming album, I Was Too Young To Hear Silence. The song is a four-minute solo sax reflection that wordlessly evokes the universal human longing to relive the past. This feeling is enhanced by the song’s video, comprising film footage of an idyllic beach day shot by American Dreams label head Jordan Reyes, premiering below.

“These sounds are the concluding moments of the record, what the entire improvisation had been leading up to,” Shiroishi tells The FADER. “Through the twists and turns of exploring sounds in and out of the alto saxophone and the acoustics of the space, I wanted to utilize the reverb and create pedal tones to help build this melody to a triumphant, purifying moment… a feeling of acceptance. The title refers to this, a moment where even though you might not want it to be the time, coming to terms that it is… what i imagine would be, a pure moment.”

“I shot five rolls of color Super 8 film while visiting my wife’s family in Sardaigne, an Italian island at the crossroads of Mediterranean history,” Reyes says of the video. “Most days we went to the beach, and I, hearing the siren song, would slap on goggles and dive into the surf. Rumination dialed back to cognition dialed back to intuition. I was porous, permeable — my skin feeling the sea, the sea feeling my skin, the division eroding ever slightly. In the video for ‘If Only Heaven Would Give Me Ten More Years,’ I wanted to impart that subtle aqueous alchemy — basically why going to the beach is pretty sick.”

I Was Too Young To Hear Silence is due out November 10 via American Dreams.
