SZA has shared the long-awaited “Shirt,” a new track that comes with a cinematic visual treatment directed by Dave Meyers and co-starring Atlanta’s LaKeith Stanfield (whom SZA stans might also remember from the “I Hate U” visualizer, released at the start of this long year). First teased back in 2020, “Shirt” finds the TDE songstress fully in her bag over slow-and-smooth production by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. “Bloodstain on my shirt / New bitch on my nerves / Old n***a got curved / Goin’ back on my word,” she sings in the chorus, looking back with new confidence at the insecurities that plagued the protagonist of 2017’s Ctrl.
In the video — a not-so-subtle homage to shoot-em-up flicks old and new (but with a particular proclivity for Tarantino) — SZA and Stanfield play a Bonnie and Clyde (or Pumpkin and Honey Bunny) style couple on a killing spree that takes them to restaurants, churches, hospitals, and constructions sites, with bloody betrayal along the way. In the clip’s final minute, as the credits roll, a new, unreleased song begins — another teaser for another future track. Watch below.
