Lucy Dacus is ready to make all your chart-topping house music dreams come true, right now, at this very moment. That's right: the singer-songwriter has covered Cher's 1998 hit "Believe" for Spotify's Singles Series. Her rendition was released on Wednesday (July 20) along with a new version of "Partner In Crime," a song from her 2021 album Home Video.
Dacus' respect for "Believe," which she calls “huge, expansive, beautiful, heart-pumping, excitement-inducing song,” is even clearer in her rendition. Instead of positioning the listener in the club, the new "Believe" is about the cold, lonely walk home when the dopamine high has led to a massive comedown. Still, there are traces of hope in the hook, where the song creaks open the cellar door and lets in a brilliant, purifying light

“ʻPartner in Crimeʼ was partially inspired by ʻBelieve,ʼ so I thought itʼd be nice to pair them together. I love Cherʼs voice and how low it gets. The timbre of her voice is so unique, you can recognize it anywhere. Even with the autotune, you can tell that itʼs Cher and nobody else. But, on our cover, taking away the autotune, I feel like you can tell that the structure of the song is very special and I did feel myself accidentally wanting to become Cher when I was doing vocal takes. It could never happen, but I love a low voiced pop legend.”
