For the past six years, Tim Heidecker has been leading a double life: creator of comedic worlds by day, earnest dad rocker by night. His music career stretches much further back, but his first fully unironic album, In Glendale, dropped in 2016, followed by a 2019 divorce-themed concept album, What the Brokenhearted Do..., and a 2020 collaborative record with Weyes Blood titled Fear of Death — though he's continued full steam with his many funny endeavors all the while. Today, he's announced High School, another release from the heart due out June 24 via Spacebomb Records. He's also dropped its lead single, "Buddy," and shared details of a summer tour in which he'll perform two-act shows featuring both comedy and music.
The forthcoming LP, true to its title, will plumb the fruitful depths of adolescence for embarrassing moments, painful memories, and other experiences that scratch at the essence of human existence. Produced by Heidecker along with Fear of Death collaborator Drew Erickson, Bonnie Light Horseman's Eric D. Johnson (formerly of The Shins), and Mac DeMarco, it will include additional contributions from Jonathan Rado and Kurt Vile.
"Buddy" is an upbeat, simply structured track whose bright chords belie melancholic remembrances of a lonely, depressed stoner teen with indifferent parents. "Buddy, I've been thinking 'bout you / Was there more that I, I could do?" Heidecker wonders. "Do you, do you think I let you down? / We lost touch the minute I moved out of town." The song comes with a lo-fi video shot and edited by Heidecker's long-time comedic collaborator Doug Lussenhop. Watch it and view Tim's tour dates below.
