Fontaines D.C. have announced a new album, Skinty Fia, out April 22 via Partisan Records. They've also dropped its lead single, "Jackie Down the Line," which comes with a video directed by Hugh Mulhern, and added new U.S. dates to their spring 2022 tour schedule.
Skinty Fia is Fontaines D.C.'s third LP and marks the third time the Dublin post-punk quintet have entered the studio with acclaimed producer Dan Carey, after their 2019 debut, Dogrel, and its 2020 follow-up, A Hero's Death. Its titular phrase translates from the old Irish to "the damnation of the deer," and a deer appears front and center in its cover art (below), bathed in an unnatural orange glow that symbolizes the alienation they've felt as they continue broaden their horizons outside their home country, according to a press release.
"Jackie Down the Line" finds Grian Chatten's cool tenor staring down a grim instrumental, warning a potential friend or lover of his tendency to disappoint: "I will wear you down in time / I will hurt you, I'll desert you / I am Jackie down the line." In the track's visual accompaniment, the band plays on a stage covered in roses near a group of entangled dancers while a stone-faced man in a conehead cap lurks in the background.
