In March, Baltimore experimental soul artist and FADER cover star serpentwithfeet shared his sophomore album DEACON, a joyously uncanny amalgamation of timeless Black musical traditions filtered through a queer perspective. serpentwithfeet will revisit the project later this year with DEACON'S GROVE, an EP containing two reinterpretations of DEACON songs, a remix of “Fellowship” featuring Ambre and Alex Isley, and the new songs “Down Nuh River” and “Shoot Ya Shot.” Today, "Down Nuh River" is out along with a music video.
“When working on ‘Down Nuh River’ I was thinking of all the songs that me, my friends and cousins made up as kids," serpentwithfeet said of the song. "We had so much fun creating and reinventing songs on the playground and the porch. I wanted to channel that energy in this track." That spirit is also present in Keith Nedd's music video, a full-on dance routine taking place in and around a high school football field. Like all of serpentwithfeet's music, "Down Nuh River" and its video are so full of life, they seem to draw breath on their own every time you press play.
