One of the recurring features in the iconic '90s sitcom Moesha was singer Brandy (who played the show's main character) sitting in her bedroom writing in her diary to process whatever was going on in her teenage life at the time. Over the years — especially on Instagram comedian's pages — the instrumental used for those introspective scenes has been repurposed for pop culture, both as a way to incite nostalgia and to reimagine what those entries would look like in today's world. But something that hadn't happened just yet was that instrumental being flipped for a song about inflicting violence on enemies. If there was anyone for the job — telling hood horror stories over adventurous production — it'd be Maryland rapper Goonew.
At the top of this month, the DMV rapper released his second solo tape of the year with Back From Hell, a slightly conceptual project that frames him as someone coming back from the dead. The tape's artwork features a photo of Goonew in a hospital bed after surviving a gunshot wound over the summer, except it's spruced up with daunting flames surrounding him. One of the tapes standouts is "Moesha," which uses the aforementioned diary theme music thanks to local standout producers Mannyvelli and Sparkheem. Today we're premiering the video on The FADER. In the 4QKP-directed visual, Goonew and crew — as per usual — are kicking it inside of a shopping center, presumably somewhere in PG County, Maryland.
