After being bumped to No. 2 for a week by Travis Scott’s “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM,” Lizzo is back to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her Cuz I Love You single “Truth Hurts.” Now in its seventh week atop the charts, “Truth Hurts” has officially tied Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” as the longest-running number one by a female rapper, a coup that Iggy was jokingly — er, “jokingly” — attempting to stop a few weeks ago. “Truth Hurts” has already set a record in this realm — at its four-week mark atop the summit, it officially became the longest-running solo No. 1 by a female rapper, as Iggy’s “Fancy” includes a feature from Charli XCX.
While it’s no sure thing, there’s a chance “Truth Hurts” could hold on to the top spot on the Hot 100 long enough for Lizzo to claim Iggy’s record for herself — per Billboard, the song has rebounded from No. 3 to No. 2 on the Digital Song Sales chart and is holding on the Streaming Songs chart. It’s still No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart, and considering the song’s closest competitors — Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s “Señorita” and Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” — have been on the chart roughly the same time as Lizzo’s track, it doesn’t seem likely they’ll make a big push to unseat it. Even if “Truth Hurts” doesn’t claim the record, there’s a silver lining for Lizzo — “Good As Hell,” another song of hers released in 2017 and added to the Cuz I Love You deluxe reissue, is surging through the Top 40, landing this week at No. 20.
“Truth Hurts’” record-tying run at No. 1 comes amid a spate of iffy press for Lizzo. Last month, the musician apologized for accusing a Postmates driver of stealing her food and, in the process, ruining her livelihood. This week, multiple producers and musicians have accused the musician of plagiarising their work, with CeCe Peniston claiming “Juice” plagiarises her song “Finally” and producer Justin Raisen alleging that “Truth Hurts” unlawfully used segments of a writing session he undertook with Lizzo.
