Erykah Badu takes a knee for Colin Kaepernick during the Soul Train Awards
“This is for Kap.”
During her performance at the 2018 Soul Train Awards on BET, Erykah Badu took a knee in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick, who has yet to receive a new NFL contract, was recently named GQ's citizen of the year.
Badu is hosting the 2018 Soul Train Awards aired on BET. She opened the showing saying "I know I usually do a big elaborate musical number, but right here I feel I need to this," before taking one knee. "This is for Kap," Badu declared.
"Kap we appreciate you, for giving up your life, your dream, for your belief in us."
Kaepernick has been an outspoken activist in his time away from the NFL and dedicates his times fighting inequality and systemic injustice. Kaepernick spent Thanksgiving with with Native American activists at Alcatraz prison for "Unthanksgiving Day," in solidarity with the struggles of Indigenous Americans.
