Barry Jenkins, director of the 2017 Best Picture Oscar winner Moonlight, has shared a surprising new collaboration: a collection of chopped-not-slopped versions of songs from two Grizzly Bear albums, 2009 album Veckatimest and this year's Painted Ruins. The project is called Purple Veckatimest / Painted Ruins (ChoppedNotSlopped), and was created with Houston-based collective The ChopStars, with DJ Candlestick on hosting duties.
Jenkins tweeted his appreciation for the indie band and the Houston-based collective on Friday morning. He wrote, "@grizzlybear yr music means the world to me, all praise to @candlestickem + @TheChopstars, taking this into production with me next week🙌🏿 ."
The "production" Jenkins refers to is the adaptation of James Baldwin's 1974 novel If Beale Street Could Talk, which Jenkins will write and direct. Jenkins is also attached to a limited series adaptation based on Colson Whitehead's Underground Railroad.
