Moonlight Will Expand To 1500 Theaters In The Wake Of Its Best Picture Win
The film will ride the Oscar wave to 1000 more screens, as compared with last week.
After picking up three Oscars, including a Best Picture win, Moonlight is set to hit 1,500 theaters nationwide this weekend, according to the film's distributor, A24 and the Associated Press. The massive expansion will land Barry Jenkins' masterpiece in almost 1000 additional locations, as compared with last week's total of 585.
At its peak, Moonlight hit just over 1100 screens. A typical major theatrical release, for the sake of comparison, is around 3,000. Awards or not though, the film would have been an unqualified financial success. Made for under $2 million, it's already grossed over $22 million domestically. The movie's DVD and Blu Ray editions also dropped this Tuesday.
In other news, after having some time to collect his thoughts after Sunday's surreal Best Picture mix-up, Barry Jenkins offered up a powerful post-show acceptance speech to the Hollywood Reporter.
