Miley Cyrus has announced her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, out May 30 via Columbia. The project follows 2023's Endless Summer Vacation, and is said to be a highly stylized concept album tapping into horror, high fashion, and surrealism.
In previous interviews, Cyrus described the album as experimental and suggested that it's about "destruction or heartbreak or death." The project is executive produced by Shawn Everett, and was recorded over several months in 2024. What songs are on the album?
The tracklist is still under wraps but the project is set to have 13 songs, Cyrus confirmed in an Instagram post.
What will Something Beautiful be about?
On March 25, Cyrus released a trailer for the album teasing a "unique visual experience" filled with glam shots, wild hair, and a sneaky cameo from Naomi Campbell.
Cyrus has described Something Beautiful as a "hypnotizing and glamorous" concept album, one that links classic horror films with high fashion concepts. In the interview with Harpers Bazaar, Cyrus said that a big influence on the record was the horror-surrealist film The Wall, a visual retelling of Pink Floyd's album of the same name. “My idea was making The Wall, but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture," she said.
She also cited Mandy, the 2018 horror film starring Nicolas Cage as a lumberjack enacting revenge on the people who killed his girlfriend, as an influence, saying that she loves a great "romance revenge story."
On the fashion side, Cyrus cited Thierry Mugler as a huge inspiration on the record, with his 1995 couture show directly shaping the record's mood board and aesthetic. (On the album cover, Cyrus's crystal-draped look is an archival piece from 1997 Thierry Mugler couture.) All of these details add up to what'll surely be a striking and dramatic record.
Who's on the record?
No features have been revealed yet, but the project was executive produced by the Grammy-winning producer Shawn Everett. Everett is known for his work with Kacey Musgraves, Alabama Shakes, The Killers, Julian Casablancas, and more.
Another person who had a large hand in shaping the album is Maxx Morando, her boyfriend and drummer of the band Liily. In an interview with Harpers Bazaar, Cyrus revealed that Morando helped her write several of the songs on the record including the title track, "Something Beautiful," and has shaped her music taste by introducing her to "the coolest kid in Brooklyn’s music."
