Tim Darcy first emerged as the frontman of Ought, the post-punk group that emerged out of the Montreal student protests with a similar political ferocity. In "Still Waking Up," the latest single form his upcoming solo album Saturday Night, Darcy gets his jangly, anxious troubadour on, like the sullen son of Jonathan Richman. He stars in the song's hypnotizing video, premiering today on The FADER and directed by Meg Remy of U.S. Girls, as a lovesick musician trying to serenade a stoic woman from outside her bedroom window. Juxtaposed with his futile attempts are a smattering of archival images, including flowers blossoming, beans growing, and a brain that rotates.
"It was great to work with Meg from US Girls," Darcy told The FADER over email. "I think she perfectly embraced the sparse romance of the song. The archival footage she made into a vibey technicolor dream sequence is my fav part of the video.
"'Still Waking Up' is a crooner, the last bit of lushness before the more pensive tunes set in. It's a song about waking up to the realization that you are in a relationship that won't become love, told through the shadows of classic love songs.”
