Listen To A Meditative Track From Abyss X's EP On Rabit's Label
Listen to the Cretan producer’s stony lamentation, “Thru Lids ● Matono Stagona Stagona.”
Cretan producer Abyss X is releasing her new EP, Mouthed, on Rabit's Halcyon Veil label. On the record, Abyss X distills the fiery mythology of her homeland within the hypnagogic beat-making niche she set for herself on previous release, Echoes. This new collection of tracks incorporates a range of found sounds and organic instruments that give the tracks an ominous, ritualistic feel.
The EP's opener, which we're premiering today, is called "Thru Lids ● Matono Stagona Stagona." It's a stony lamentation for someone dearly departed from Abyss X's life. The track crackles with loops of grisly plucked mandolin dancing between tweaked-out strings and echoing vocals.
"I was inspired by the Minoan Master of Animals pendant to write it," she told The FADER over email. "In my head, the image translated as taming nature or coming to terms with the event of death. I re-imagined a contemporary take on how the lament could sound and be played in ancient Crete, my homeland and mother of the Minoan people, a female-empowered civilization with an energy and enigmatic history that I feel runs in my blood. It is a highly esoteric track, and while it is dark with a dramatic tone, I feel that it leaves you with a sense of hope and peacefulness in the end."
Mouthed is out September 30 on Halcyon Veil. Abyss X will be performing at Trans Pecos tomorrow, September 22, with Gooddroid, DJ NJ Drone, and others.
