Lin-Manuel Miranda is planning to expand the reach of his universally acclaimed Broadway musical with a spin-off mixtape. He original announced the project last fall on Twitter. “Cast album is out,” he wrote at the time. “Now we begin planning The Hamilton Mixtape. Remixes & Covers & Inspired bys. FOR REAL. GET READY.”
According to an interview in Vanity Fair (captured by Playbill), the project will arrive sometime this year. Questlove, who also served as a producer on the Hamilton cast album, will be involved, along with a slew of high-powered artists, including Busta Rhymes, Ben Folds, Regina Spektor, Queen Latifah, Common and Chance the Rapper.
“People are coming out of the woodwork, knocking on the door,” Miranda explained. “Half the songs are cover versions of songs in the show, and the others are interpolations—we’ll take some of this, some of that, and make something new out of it.”
He added, “I really wanted the hip-hop community to embrace Hamilton because it’s such a love letter to them.” Revisit the Hamilton cast album below.
