Teengirl Fantasy And Hoody’s New Video Hums With Acceleration

If you've spent any time in the 4REAL-designed virtual environments that Teengirl Fantasy released with their new Thermal EP, then the video for closing track "U Touch Me," featuring Korean pop artist Hoody (후디), might look familiar—you've already seen bits of it from a sports car, zooming through the desert at dusk. In that environment, your experience of the video, directed by Tatiana Valentin and Taran Allen and made in collaboration with MOCAtv, is dizzyingly mediated by speed in that you're only able to catch glimpses of it, yet now that it's full screen the viewer is pushed away from direct engagement in other ways: Hoody stands behind a plane of glass or is fixated by a camcorder for most of the video, doubling the removal already implied by the fact that you're watching the video through your computer or smartphone screen. A luxury coupe like the one in the virtual environment makes an appearance, as do hummingly psychedelic images of water in lush combinations of pink, blue and purple—overall, the "U Touch Me" video manages to feel totally accelerated and calmly in stasis at the same time.
