“Every Other Freckle” is the new single by alt-J, released ahead of their follow up LP to 2012’s Mercury Prize-winning An Awesome Wave. The tune is based around a ‘70s southern rock guitar riff, Easy Rider style, but it makes the most of contemporary digital audio workstation software to take unexpected formal twists and turns with each new section. Lead singer Joe Newman’s theatricality and playfulness bring to mind rock opera a little bit, while the song’s diverse instrumentation and moving harmonic parts invoke the carefully composed baroque pop of someone like Harry Nilsson. For this remix, Southern stalwart Big K.R.I.T. hops on for a brief but direct feature early on, masterfully weaving his smooth yet agile flow through just the right pockets in the beat, keeping on the theme of lust for that special someone.
