Common and Lil Herb bridge two decades of Chicago rap in their new collaboration,"The Neighborhood," a harrowing account of street life backed by a melancholy Curtis Mayfield sample and a wailing hook from singer Cocaine 80s. "The Neighborhood" sets the mood for Common's aptly-titled 10th LP, Nobody's Smiling, and despite generational and stylistic gaps, the smooth Common and dour Herb sound natural together lurking through the South Side.
