Today, Memphis' Zed Zilla released a new tape, Time 2 Eat, and it's pretty outstanding, thanks largely to impressive production from Gibo and quietly influential Memphis native Lil Lody. Highlights include "Memphis Shit"—which does what it says on the tin, bringing together local legends DJ Paul and Yo Gotti—and "Summer Nights," for which Lody flips a Lana Del Rey sample to improbably non-cringeworthy results. I keep coming back to "License Suspended," a clubby, debaucherous interpolation of Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools." For some context on Zilla's decade-long career, read Andrew Nosnitsky's FADER feature on Memphis rap.
