The general idea—and at this point it is a pretty predictable thing—is that bands release an EP. Usually it'll have a lot of heart but will survive on ideas instead of actual song execution. Some enterprising label sees potential and signs the band, giving them time and money to develop their sound and become INTERNATIONAL POP MEGASTARS (hopefully). You could almost plug Small Black into that scenario, except they aren't international pop megastars quite yet, but they also released an earlier EP that was basically the best of both worlds. The ideas were there and the heart was there, so songs that you thought you'd forget in a month or two wormed their way directly into your ear canal and it became less about wondering when they were going to get an actual recording budget and be on an actual label and more about what would happen when they stepped their songwriting up just a little more. New Chain is the answer to that, and "Photojournalist" is the first single. Like the old Small Black except with cooler drums and clearer vocals. Sounds like a bunch of '80s synthpop dudes whispering into a girl's ear.
