Video: Sebastian Blanck and Caroline Polachek (Chairlift), “Thunder”

July 29, 2010

The fact that Sebastian Blanck's album comes out on Rare Book Room Records and that this video was recorded at the Rare Book Room studios is incredibly fitting. Have you guys ever been to an actual rare book room? It feels so sacred and intimidating, like if we breathed too hard all the pages of a first edition of Alice in Wonderland would crumble or something. Anyway, the point is that Sebastian Blanck has made a record full of solemn, really well done folk. It's not like a crazily sonically adventurous record or anything, but it doesn't need to be. "Thunder" is the kind of collaboration that will hold up years from now. It's not the product of a marketing scheme (as far as we know), it isn't forced or weird or jarring, instead it's just two people in an intimate setting recording serious folk jams beautifully shot by Chai Vasarhelyi. Watch the video up above and then listen to Blanck's equally good "Empire of the Free" below (plus if you click his name in this post it'll take you to some more songs by him, including an mp3 version of "Thunder").
