One summer we headed upstate and sat in front of glittering water while an old leathery burnout played an endless guitar solo through a tiny amp, relaxed and leaning back on a lawn chair. Maybe it's next level, or maybe we just wanted it to be deeper than it really was. Something more than just some dude with doubles of every Steve Vai record living out his dreams on a fake beach in an antique town. Julian Lynch just posted a new song called "Mare" on his Tumblr (can we just call it a blog?), on the surface its a lot of twangy guitar repetition, solo as both backbone and centerpiece. He's got the Bradford Cox falsetto mumble down too—like maybe there are words in there somewhere but it doesn't really matter too much if we're just going to get hypnotized by the guitar anyway. On the surface it's a lot like leathery dude: maybe not that deep, but pretty enjoyable anyway. Except those drums carry so much weight, and is that a piano in there? A xylophone? What if Julian Lynch became our Steve Vai?
