Schnipper’s Slept On

April 29, 2008

Each Tuesday, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper highlights an underappreciated recent release he thinks we need to know about. This week it's Deerhoof's Reveille. Download "Holy Night Fever" from the album here (right click, save as), buy it here and read about it after the jump.

This is the limited version of this record, on Global Buddy Records. Inside, there is a Global Buddy business card. On the backside it says “Business Cards are FREE at VistaPrint.com” I ordered it when I still lived in the dorm and you had to go to the campus mail room to pick up packages. I did this on the way to my major authors class on Don DeLillo. I opened it walking to the class. I remember feeling simultaneously cool and dumb because I had a record in class. Some kid I think a girl I dated later dated asked me what it was. It was Deerhoof. A few of us drove up to Baltimore not long after the album came out to see them play and the drummer had a cymbal, a piccolo snare and a bass drum with a tambourine tied around it with rope. So many people had driven up from DC to the Talking Head. The club was the size of a big bedroom. I mean, like a really big bedroom in a medium sized mansion, but, still, you know what I mean. The singerlady she did all this weird stop-motion aerobics and sang about pandas and flowers. We got really into Deerhoof after that. My friend Jacob ordered a VHS magazine that had practice footage of them. (I remember I was watching it in his living room in Silver Spring when my parents called me to tell me my cousin had had her baby. She was 17 or 18, it was weird.) I don’t get why they kept making records. I stopped listening after this one.
