Steve Lacy announces new album Oh Yeah?, offers update on The Internet
The follow-up to 2022’s Gemini Rights will be released in the “near future,” according to a Rolling Stone profile. New music from The Internet is also on the way.
Steve Lacy was everywhere in 2022. His massively successful single "Bad Habit" went from TikTok virality to critical and commercial acclaim, snagging three Grammy Awards (Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance) and over a billion streams. The track appeared on the album Gemini Rights, one of our favorite albums of 2022, coming in at No.16.
Since then, news of a follow-up has been scarce. Just this May, Lacy hinted that he wasn't in any rush to release his third studio album, telling fans "i aint dropping another album till yall go appreciate [Gemini Rights] like yall needed to."
In a new Rolling Stone profile, however, Lacy confirmed that there is a new album: it's called Oh Yeah?, and it will be released in the "near future." And yes, the cover does depict a version of the Kool-Aid Man, though Lacy hopes it's different enough that he won't be sued.
The profile describes Oh Yeah?'s sound as an "all-encompassing pop album that artists like Prince [...] used to make." There are "classic rock ballads," moments of "trip-hop and electronica," and a newfound focus on synthesizers on the album, which Lacy self-produced. “He is getting into areas that I feel like are very reminiscent of a pop of yesteryear, which is very good,” says Matt Martians, Lacy's bandmate in the beloved R&B group The Internet.
Speaking of The Internet, Lacy gave a rare update on the group, which has been dormant since releasing their 2018 album Hive Mind. He says they've been "hanging out" and to "expect new music soon."
The full profile is full of insight into Lacy's thoughts on writing music, career longevity, and how he dealt with virality, from "Bad Habit" to smashing a belligerent fan's phone at a concert. One particularly cute detail: Lacy's been wearing new album merch in his Instagram posts for the past few months. Read the full profile here.
