A Degrassi documentary starring Drake will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival
Degrassi: Whatever It Takes joins a line-up that also includes new movies starring Angelina Jolie, Saoirse Ronan, and Charli xcx.
A new documentary about the making of the 2000s Canadian teen drama Degrassi featuring an appearance by Drake is among the highlights of the Toronto International Film Festival line-up announced today. The 50th edition of the festival takes place from September 4-14 and is one of the major events in the film calendar as studios begin their Oscar campaigns in earnest.
Degrassi: Whatever It Takes appears iIn the documentary strand of the festival. It is directed by Lisa Rideout and has the logline: "Superstar rapper Drake looks back on his Degrassi era alongside the franchise’s creators, stars, and superfans in this engaging history of the Canadian show that changed teen TV."
Drake appeared on Degrassi: The Next Generation from 2001-2009, playing the role of Jimmy Brooks, a high school basketball player who was left needing to use a wheelchair following a school shooting.
In addition to the Degrassi doc, TIFF will also play premiere to new movies starring Angelina Jolie, Saoirse Ronan, and Keanu Reeves among many more.
Jolie stars in the French director Alice Winocour’s new drama Couture while Ronan leads Bad Apples, the story of a British schoolteacher dealing with a troubled 11-year-old student. Reeves, meanwhile, appears alongside Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer in Good Fortune, the directorial debut of Aziz Ansari.
Toronto will also get the first look at Sacrifice, an action comedy starring Charli xcx plus Anya Taylor-Joy and Salma Hayek, as well as Christy, a biopic of the female boxer Christy Martin starring Sydney Sweeney.
