Jay Som has shared details of her first new album in more than six years. The artist, also known as Melina Duterte, will release Belong on October 10 via Polyvinyl Record Co. Two songs from the album, "Float" and "A Million Reasons Why," have been released alongside today's announcement. Scroll down to listen to both tracks now.
"Float" features additional vocals by Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World. In a statement, Duterte described the song as being about “desperately trying to hold on to past versions of yourself for self preservation. The fear of the unknown is so overwhelming that sometimes the best solution is to sit with it instead of fighting or running from it.”
Other guest vocalists on Belong include Paramore's Hayley Williams (who appears on a song titled "Past Lives") and Lexi Vega of Mini Trees.
Since releasing Anak Ko in 2019, Duterte has produced for artists including Lucy Dacus and boygenius, as well as joining that band as a member of their live band. In 2021 she released Doomin' Sun, a collaborative album made alongside Bachelor and Palehound while last year she contributed to the I Saw the TV Glow soundtrack
In addition to a new album, Jay Som is also going on tour later this year with a headline tour that starts in November. Tickets will be available from Friday, July 11 at 10 am locally.
