At least 124 people killed in roof collapse at nightclub in Dominican Republic

Rescue workers continue to excavate the site of the disaster, which claimed the life of headlining performer Rubby Pérez.

A roof collapse at Jet Set, a nightclub in the Dominican Republic, on Tuesday has left at least 124 people dead and dozens more injured, according to local officials. The tragedy took place during a weekly live music and dance night called Merengazo, headlined by Rubby Pérez. The popular merengue artist was pronounced dead by his team the following day.

Several public figures were present at the show including former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, and Montecristi province governor Nelsy Cruz. "All relief agencies have provided the necessary assistance and are working tirelessly in the rescue efforts," President Luis Abinader said on Tuesday morning. The cause of the collapse has not been revealed as of press time.

Puerto Rican stars have posted their condolences for the victims. "There are no words that can offer comfort in the face of such a tragedy," Bad Bunny posted on Twitter, with Daddy Yankee offering his thoughts on Instagram.

Jet Set promised full cooperation with authorities in any ensuing investigations. "There are not enough words to express the sorrow this event generates. What happened was devastating for all. We want you to know that we are with you, that we share your grief."
