It's not an April Fools joke: Skrillex has indeed dropped a new album. But the electronic titan's latest colossal effort, F*CK U SKRILLEX YOU THINK UR ANDY WARHOL BUT UR NOT!! <3, is certainly in on the bit.
The 34-track fifth studio album was announced the day before on Instagram and is his final release on his label OWSLA/Atlantic Records. Despite its winking title, taken from the piece of street graffiti that makes up its cover, it seems to be a record with a lot weighing on it: a response of sorts to his perceived public image — the first song is titled “SKRILLEX IS DEAD” and samples of people saying that exact thing are littered throughout the record — and a return to form.
Over a decade ago, Skrillex's introduction of “the drop” to mainstream pop radio ushered in an era of dubstep-inflected party anthems. That sound is the essence of the new project, a glorified 46-minute mix of wobbly dubstep, precipitous climbs, and hilarious producer tags (“this beat is so crazy it might be illegal”), reasserting his legacy.
A bevy of guest features — 28 in total — round out the record with contributions from electronic collective swedm®, Dylan Brady, Boys Noise, Wake, G Jones, Zacari, Starrah, bgirl, Varg2™, Whitearmor, Eurohead & jamesjamesjames, and more. The record also contains the long-awaited fan favorite song, "Voltage."
Skrillex's last records, Don't Get Too Close and Quest For Fire, traversed emo, rap, J-pop, memecore, and more, as he set about cashing in on more modern strains of popular music. Now that OG Skrillex is back, perhaps one can finally say with confidence that recession-era party music has fully returned.
