Chappell Roan says she’s no longer approached by fans after statement decrying “creepy behavior”

The pop star said during her Call Her Daddy interview that she created a “force field” after comments criticizing entitled supporters.

One of the most disheartening controversies of 2024 came in August when Chappell Roan forcefully – and completely understandably – spoke out against fans who aggressively approach her for photographs or hugs. A lot of people in the pop world were not happy about this, but Roan stood her ground, and in the end it was for the best. As Roan revealed on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast, her statements have led fans to stop approaching her completely.

“I think people are scared of me,” Roan said. “I think I made a big enough deal about not talking to me that people do not talk to me." In her August videos, Roan said that she "[doesn't] want whatever the fuck you think you’re supposed to be entitled to whenever you see a celebrity. I don’t give a fuck if you think it’s selfish of me to say no for a photo or for your time or for a hug. That’s not normal... I’m allowed to say no to creepy behaviour, OK?”

Roan also told Cooper that "three or four" of her celebrity friends have remarked that her presence is like a "force field" that extends around them when they're together, preventing fans from approaching them as well. "I'm like 'Damn, baby, you say it too!' You say 'Don't touch me, don't look at me, don't look at me, I don't know who you are.' And they won't come up and bother you."

"I know it really hurts people," Roan said of her stance on fan interactions. "They feel like it's me disrespecting them, that I owe it them... that I'm complaining about success. But I'm not complaining about success. I'm complaining about creepy behaviour... I just don't want you to interrupt me when I'm having a fight with my girlfriend."

Roan's appearance on Call Her Daddy comes two weeks after the release of "The Giver," her country-pop single and first new track since last year's "Good Luck, Babe!"
