Midway through Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR’s Some Sexy Songs 4 U, a soft but impactful voice takes over. It comes from Pimmie, a Houston-based songwriter who has won the Drizzy lottery. “Please, don't go out with your friends,” she pleads on “Pimmie’s Dilemma” alongside a carefully picked acoustic guitar. “They don't ever keep you in check/ They gon' let you do whatever/ And blame it on the liquor.” It’s a song about trust in relationships and being able to feel comfortable when your significant other hasn’t text back in a few hours. It is also something of a rarity on a Drake project, a song that gives the women in his life a voice and agency.

Outside of being the rapper’s strategic first move post his Kendrick Lamar beef — $ome $exy $ongs 4 U showcases another skill Drake never lost: his ability to pluck a relative unknown and put them firmly in the spotlight (see previous entrants like Giveon and Yebba). Prior to her appearance on $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, Pimmie had only released a handful of music and has never given an interview. As such, there isn’t much information about her online — but her short interlude has already left the internet buzzing about the potential star.

Who is Pimmie, and how did she get connected with Drake?

Pimmie is an R&B singer based in Houston, Texas. There is no confirmation as to how she ended up on $ome $exy $ongs 4 U but Drake owns a ranch in the city and presumably knows people. She also works as a mixing and mastering engineer and was advertizing her availability in that role until recently. “Pimmie’s Dilemma” probably means she doesn’t have to worry about booking studio time with other artists, though.

She has only been releasing music for a short period of time, with two EPs and a single from 2024 all that is currently available on streaming services. She also appears to be teasing new material online, which seems like the smart thing to do right now.

For fans of SZA and Snoh Aalegra

Released in February 2024, Pimmie’s debut EP BITTERSWEET is a collection of smoldering late-night ballads that would fit perfectly alongside SZA and Snoh Aalegra on a playlist for the broken-hearted. The songs are all brief snapshots of emotional turmoil with minimalist production leaving space for Pimmie to put her smooth and emotive voice to the front. “Wish I Never” is perhaps the standout track, with Pimmie calling herself out for some toxic traits while pleading to be taken seriously. It feels like a precursor to “Pimmie’s Dilemma” for sure.

Her latest music shows growth, and isn’t afraid to get messy

Pimmie dropped a track titled “One Deep” soon after her first EP and then returned a few months later with Bye Luv, a three-song project produced by Imovekiloz (who is also credited on “Pimmie’s Dilemma”). The songs on Bye Luv show progression from the raw confessions of BITTERSWEET: “Slauson” is filled with vocal riffs and runs while “Bless Up” is a lament to a relationship that seemed perfect before it crashed and burned. The influence of an artist like Jhené Aiko is present in Pimmie’s writing, which is unafraid to get messy but often comes from a place of having moved on from the situation.
