In a recent Variety cover feature, Billie Eilish spoke about her complicated feelings about women, saying she often felt that women didn't like her. "I have deep connections with women in my life, the friends in my life, the family in my life," she said in the magazine's "Hitmakers" issue. "I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence."
On Saturday Variety celebrated the release of the “Hitmakers” issue with a brunch in Los Angeles. Eilish attended the event and spoke to one of the magazine's reporters on the red carpet. The reporter asked Eilish if she had intended to "come out" in the profile, to which Eilish explained that she didn't really think that she had and that she doesn't see it as a big deal, either way.
"I’m just like, why can’t we just exist?" she asked. "I’ve been doing this for a long time and I just didn’t talk about it…whoops." This back-and-forth was clipped and shared across social media over the weekend, with a message billing it as the moment Eilish "opens up about coming out."
The whole thing appears to have (understandably) upset and annoyed Eilish a little, who responded via Instagram on Sunday. She accompanied an image of a sapphic belt buckle with the caption: "thanks variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters. i like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares."
Eilish recently spoke about the way other people talk about her when she gave Lil Yachty a pass for his lyrics about her body on his recent Drake collaboration, "Another Late Night."
In more music-orientated news, Eilish is hard at work on the follow-up to 2021's Happier Than Ever and recently revealed she is in the "final stages" of work on the album.
