Florida has long been one of the most inventive regions for rap music, with distinct scenes and sounds coming out of every major city. Recently, Tallahassee has been at the forefront of the state, with rappers like Luh Tyler and Wizz Haven channeling the breathless pace of Michigan rap. SpliffJit’s delivery is especially effortless, and on his new track “Polyester Flow,” the Tallahassee rapper runs off on the plug without breaking a sweat. Even as he’s unloading bar after bar, SpliffJit never sounds stressed, and his muddy drawl lends his voice a naturally relaxed and laid-back timbre. Even as he’s plotting schemes, there’s a playfulness to SpliffJit’s lyricism too: “Bad bitch, she gon’ eat me up like I’m an edible.” The instrumental sounds downright luxurious, as an 808 bass bangs over a muted saxophone and breezy guitar line, making for a distinctly swampy blend of street rap and yacht rock. SpliffJit might be from Tallahassee, but “Polyester Flow” is pure Miami Vice music.
