The FADER’s transgender charity covers compilation FADER & Friends Volume 1 is out now, available exclusively on Bandcamp until December 1, 2023. 100% of the proceeds go towards the Transgender Law Center, Mermaids, and Rainbow Railroad. Throughout the month of November, we’re speaking to the artists who contributed to the 44-song collection about the songs they covered.
One of the highlights of the mid-2010s synth-pop renaissance, Shura's 2014 single "Touch" launched the English singer-songwriter's career and remains a staple of nostalgic puppy-love playlists. For her cover of the tune, Vancouver artist Hannah Georgas turns the song down from a boil to a simmer, layering her voice over an elementally reverbed electric guitar. Other elements, like gently-tapped drums and airy synths, are added gradually until the full picture forms as quickly as a sunset and lasts for an even shorter period of time.

What's your first memory of this song?
I can't remember exactly how I discovered it but it's a song that I remember being immediately drawn to. I've listened to it a million times and love it so much. It's so catchy and beautiful. It's one of those cry-on-the-dance-floor kind of songs.
Why did you decide to record it as your cover?
I'm a really big fan of the song and thought it would be fun to try my own version of it.
What does this song mean to you personally?
The lyrics are super relatable and the production is so good! I love songs that feel simple in their structure and yet somehow manage to strike such an emotional reaction. It's an art to be able to do that and I strive to achieve that in my songwriting.
What's another song you'd love to cover and why?
I'd love to cover a tune called "(Feels Like) Heaven" by a band called Fiction Factory. It's a song from the 80's and I think I only discovered it in the last 10 years. It evokes this euphoric feeling whenever I listen to it. It has this blissful kind of tone to it and it's definitely a song that I wish I wrote... It really does feel like heaven, lolll.
