The Long Beach tunnel referenced in the title of Lana Del Rey’s ninth studio album, Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd., is being revamped into a speakeasy.
According to the Long Beach Business Journal the long-abandoned Jergins Tunnel will become an old-school lounge featuring music that "ties into our local vibe," according to Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson.
Closed to the public in 1967, the tunnel used to be a subway connecting downtown Long Beach to the beach, and it'll now be reborn as one of several dining options inside the new Hard Rock Hotel. Set to open in 2027, Richardson called the latest addition to the Long Beach skyline a nod to the city's homegrown talent, including Sublime, Snoop Dogg, War, and Vince Staples.
Prior to her brief stint as a Waffle House waitress, Del Rey released the critically acclaimed Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd. earlier this year. It's currently nominated for Album of the Year at the 2024 Grammys, alongside World Music Radio by "Candy Necklace" collaborator, Jon Batiste. Other nominees for the coveted prize include SZA's SOS, Taylor Swift's Midnights, Boygenius' The Record, Miley Cyrus' Endless Summer Vacation, Janelle Monáe's The Age of Pleasure, and Olivia Rodrigo's Guts.
