Rap Blog is a weekly showcase of a standout rap song written by Vivian Medithi and Nadine Smith.
In-demand Atlanta producer Popstar Benny has described his music as “the soundtrack to a videogame that doesn’t exist.” His serpentine beat for “So What” would pair perfectly with just about any GIF off the Video Game Rain Twitter account, a woozy synth line kicked into clattering gear by claps and snares. It’s mesmerizing enough to forgive Benny for teasing us with the snippet all year.
Riding around in the digital rain is Anycia, a fellow Atlantan whose imperturbable raps crawl forward like the rising tide. “I don't like nobody in my business 'cause I'm grown,” she chides, sounding half-asleep and fully over it. Her semi-somnambulant rasp never rushes ahead, like she’s used to people waiting to hear from her. Point in case: “I be super pressed for time, so I see you when I can,” she warns a paramour. It doesn’t even matter that Anycia “ain’t never on your time” — she knows you’ll be there when she calls.
