Kelela announces RAVE:N, The Remixes
The news comes with the project’s lead single, Karen Nyame KG’s remix of Kelela’s Raven cut “Contact.”
Kelela has announced RAVE:N, The Remixes, a new project in which the D.C.-born, L.A.-based artist’s peers will reinterpret tracks from her February LP, Raven. The news doesn’t come with a release date, but it’s accompanied by the forthcoming record’s lead single — Karen Nyame KG’s take on “Contact” — and a visual “vignette.”
The original video for “Contact” found Kelela in a hotel room, preparing for a night out. Yasser Abubeker’s clip for the new remix — a cloudy, trance-inspired flip — is also set in a hotel room, but it’s both more zoomed in and more abstract, showing Kelela in shillouette as she looks out over a Tokyo cityscape.
“Sometimes I feel like I make original tracks just to experience the remix,” Kelela says in a press release. “I think about how something will be interpolated while I’m writing and recording. Each one is exhilarating to hear/add to and KG’s remix was no exception. It’s hitting supreme levels of sexy—makes me wanna seduce someone on the dance floor. I saw a tweet yesterday in response to the teaser for this song that said: ‘One thing bout you? You gon’ imagine then RE-imagine a body of work.’ and it made me feel so seen.”
