The 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards were broadcast on TV last night after being held in Atlanta on October 3. The show featured a number of impressive performances, including a tribute to a local Atlanta favorite, Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Recordings. Dupri was joined on stage by Ludacris, Nelly, Lil Jon, Da Brat, Chingy, Bow Wow, Bone Crusher, Tyrese, and Dem Franchize Boyz.
There were plenty of contemporary names in the building, too, with performances from City Girls, GloRilla, and Fivio Foreign. Sexyy Red, fresh from her appearance on Drake's For All The Dogs, ran through her solo hits “Pound Town” and “SkeeYee” and also joined DaBaby for his performance alongside Juvenile and Mannie Fresh.
There was also a tribute to I Am Hip Hop Award recipient Marley Marl featuring LL Cool J and Rakim, plus a DJ Drama retrospective with T.I., Jeezy, Lil Jon, and Fabolous.
Kendrick Lamar was the big winner on the night, though he was not in attendance at the Cobb Energy Center. He was named hip hop artist of the year, best live performer, lyricist of the year and, alongside his creative partner Dave Free, video director of the year.
Lil Uzi Vert’s "Just Wanna Rock" won song of the year while Her Loss by Drake & 21 Savage was named hip hop album of the year.
