Even at their most hype, xaviersobased songs have the quality of guided meditations. The rapper, producer, and affiliate of the underground collective Novagang always sounds locked into the present moment even when his voice turns from serenely processed haze into a digitized Doberman’s bark. “fuck the city up,” a song from his new EP Stash Muzik, splits the difference: xavier’s beat is a tempest of alarm siren trance synths and rattling 808s, while his flow is fixed firmly in “Speaker Knockerz singing a lullaby” territory. “fuck the city up” is something you dreamed of hearing at an all-night rave, a song plucked from a distant and thrilling reality.
