Mt Pleasant, Cosha's 2021 debut, was a collection of soft and flirtatious electronic R&B songs with a reassuringly firm touch. The Ireland-based artist, who has collaborated with Shygirl and Mura Masa in the past, has kept a relatively low profile in the last couple of years but returns today with "Sun Back," a song that doesn't so much usher in a new sound but offers up that latest evolution of an artist who rarely sits still.
Where Mt Pleasant songs such as "No Kink in the Wire" and "Do You Wanna Dance" were emboldened and sexually charged, "Sun Back" is a little more hesitant. Cosha says in a statement accompanying the single that she's "lost a good few great loves" in the past couple of years and the new material feels like an artist finding their feet again. The instrumentation is loose, offering space for Cosha to be vulnerable as she sings about "just trying to believe in myself. Just trying to speak with my chest."
As the song progresses, Cosha reflects on those close to her who have helped pull her through the times that have knocked her down. "Sun Back" is the sound of those long days spent indoors slowly becoming a faded memory. The warmth of a summer's day is reflected in the gratitude she feels for those who got her back to this point.
