Travis Scott's UTOPIA arrived on Friday and it's a summer blockbuster to rival anything Barbie or Oppenheimer could offer up. Scott's first album since 2018's Astroworld runs for over an hour and includes 19 tracks. The album is packed with a vast array of guests including, notably, Beyoncé. She appears on "DELRESTO (ECHOES)," which marks her first time working with the Cactus Jack label head.
That's just the tip of the guestlist, however, with The Weeknd, SZA, Drake, Bon Iver, Sampha, Bad Bunny, Future, and Yung Lean also popping up at various stages. Comedian Dave Chappelle is also on the list, cropping up on "PARASAIL"
Production-wise, Scott handles much of the beats but there are also credits for his regular collaborator Mike Dean, plus Kanye West, Metro Boomin, James Blake, Vegyn, Tay Keith, Boi-1da, and more. Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo is a co-producer on "MODERN JAM." It seems some credited writers were more aware of their appearances than others, with PC Music affiliate umru tweeting his surprise at seeing his name mentioned (he later clarified that "DELRESTO (ECHOES)" uses a piano sample he placed on Splice.
Scott has been teasing the arrival of his new album Utopia for many months now. Last week he shared the lead single "K-POP," which features The Weeknd and Bad Bunny.
The rapper and Cactus Jack label head had stated that he would perform in front of the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt for a live stream event today, July 28, to celebrate the release of the album. However, the live show was axed shortly after Egypt’s Musicians’ Syndicate stated that they would revoke any license needed to perform due, in part, to Scott's unspecified “rituals." You can read more about the whole thing went down here.
Scott also released a movie, titled Circus Maximus, in theaters on Thursday night. The film was directed by Scott alongside a raft of arthouse collaborators, including Gaspar Noé, Harmony Korine, and Nicolas Winding Refn.
