You’ve probably heard by now about how this year marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. It’s a theme last night’s BET awards embraced with gusto, featuring performances from generational icons alongside the hottest up-and-comers of the moment. Lil Uzi Vert kicked off the night in style with “Just Wanna Rock.” And Ice Spice‘s mashup of “Munch (Feelin’ U),” “Princess Diana,” and “In Ha Mood” — complete with a Bronx-themed backdrop — totally cemented her star power. Rah Digga, Swizz Beatz, and Coi Leray even teamed up for a Busta Rhymes tribute.
The night’s most emotional beat, though, came courtesy of Migos. Quavo and Offset reunited to pay tribute to Takeoff, who was shot and killed last year. A rocket ship projected behind their performance of “Bad and Boujee” caught fire and literally took off to reveal an image of their late third member. Other touching moments included Davido becoming the second ever Afrobeats artist to take the BET stage, and Coco Jones winning Best New Artist on the back of her awesome throwback R&B single “ICU,” which she also sang live. Check out those performances and more below.
