I watch Gregg Araki’s The Doom Generation for the first time last week and, not five minutes into the ’90s queer Bonnie & Clyde & Clyde thriller, we got the first of two Slowdive needle drops. For the English group, it’s one of the perks of being a leader in the emergence of shoegaze and dream-pop — their history can be traced through the underground in some unexpected and very cool ways. Now, with the sound they pioneered has a new generation in its grasp, Slowdive are back with a new album called everything is alive. Out September 1 via Dead Oceans, Slowdive’s fifth full-length arrives after 2017’s self-titled, which was the band’s first album in 22 years.

The project’s lead single “kisses” arrives today along with the album announcement. In a press statement, guitarist and vocalist Neil Halstead says the song’s breezy tone is reflective of the mood on everything is alive: “It wouldn’t feel right to make a really dark record right now. The album is quite eclectic emotionally, but it does feel hopeful.” Director Noel Paul pulls from Wong Kar Wai’s Fallen Angels in the track’s music video, where a young person drives what appears to be friends, associates, and family around on a motorcycle. Watch below, followed by Slowdive’s upcoming 2023 tour dates.
