Eugene Melnyk originally bought the Senators for $92 million in 2003. The team has been available for purchase since his death, age 62, in 2022.

If Tesfaye is bidding to take control of the Senators then he joins a keen contest. Last week it was reported that Snoop Dogg is part of a group led by the Los Angeles-based businessman Neko Sparks seeking to purchase the franchise.

Meanwhile, actor Ryan Reynolds confirmed his interest in purchasing the team in 2022. He already owns Welsh soccer side Wrexham AFC alongside It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia's Rob McElhenney and is teaming up with the Remington real estate company to submit a bid reportedly worth over $1 billion for the Senators ownership.

The Sun reports the deadline for submissions is May 15 with final approval of the sale coming from the NHL by this summer.

The FADER has contacted The Weeknd's rep for comment.
