Maxine Funke, River Said
New Zealand singer-songwriter Maxine Funke makes music that assumes very little but expresses a great deal. Like Jessica Pratt or German one-album wonder Sibylle Baier, she lives in quiet, un-quantized spaces of acoustic truth. On her new EP River Said, the most poignant of these moments come on tracks like “Cherry Blossom Gin” and “Call On You,” where subtle chords ripple the crystalline waters of her voice. But it’s the wordless, Arthur Russell-inspired “Long Beach,” full of field recordings and longing strings soar over a fog of shimmering synths, that stands out as the album’s most evocative cut.
