San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich used ten minutes of his final pregame news conference of the season to criticize lawmakers on the lack of gun control in schools.
On May 27, America's 13th school shooting of 2023 took place in Nashville. He quotes Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) who tweeted, "My office is in contact with federal, state, & local officials, & we stand ready to assist," before responding, "What are you going to assist with? Cleaning up their brains off the wall? Wiping the blood off the schoolroom floor? What are you going to assist with?"
He also reads a tweet from Gov. Bill Lee (R-TN), who said, "I am closely monitoring the tragic situation at Covenant... As we continue to respond, please join us in praying for the school, congregation & Nashville community." Popvich continues, "What are you monitoring? They're dead. Children. They're dead!"
The coach goes on to address his concerns for his own grandchildren whenever he drops them off at school, asking "Is it freedom for kids to go to school and try to socialize and try to learn and be scared to death they might die that day?” He then calls the Second Amendment "a myth, a joke. It's just a game they play."
