Two Shell share “Digital Monsters” and “+me”
They’re available to purchase on Bandcamp.
Two Shell‘s movements are those of an electronic duo that’s found a balance between keeping the underground and the extremely online sated. Their (possibly prerecorded) Boiler Room set at Primavera, for example, stoked controversy, but how could you deny that tracklist? And both their sound and aesthetic — post-hyperpop rave dressed in turn-of-the-millennium fashions pulled from an event horizon — deliver both a degree of comfort and excitement for what’s to come.
Today (March 17), Two Shell have kept their independent streak alive, sharing two new songs on Bandcamp: “Digital Monsters” and “+me” (“4am,” a rare song that first emerged in December 2022, was shared as well but removed as this post was being written). Both tracks take on a more sinister tone than the songs on lil spirit, Two Shell’s February EP. “Digital Monsters” is a cascade of grime tones and ping-ponging techno beats, while “+me” coasts on Aphex Twin melodies and two-step drums as it repurposes Two Shell’s signature Vocaloid to create a semi-sentient and inquisitive voice, like what you’d imagine ChatGPT to sound like if all the apocalyptic warnings turn out to be prescient. It doesn’t get much more internet-y than that, but thankfully the music is much greater than the sum of its allusions. Listen below.
