Unknown Mortal Orchestra have confirmed details of its fifth studio album. The aptly titled V is a double album and will be released on March 17 via Jagjaguwar. A new song, "Layla," is streaming below.
According to press materials, the impetus for V came when UMO band leader Ruban Nielson, who is of Hawaiian-New Zealand heritage, returned to the Pacific Ocean state in 2020 to help care for a family member. While there he reunited with his brother Kody and the pair then flew to Palm Springs to work together on new music.
“In Hawaii, everything shifted off of me and my music,” Ruban Nielson says in a statement. “Suddenly, I was spending more time figuring out what others need and what my role is within my family. I also learned that things I thought were true of myself are bigger than I thought. My way of making mischief - that’s not just me - that’s my whole Polynesian side. I thought I was walking away from music to focus on family, but the two ended up connecting.”
In addition to "Layla," V also includes the single "I Killed Captain Cook," which first came out last year. The band will be on tour across North America from late March. See below for the full schedule.
The new album follows 2018 studio album Sex & Food and instrumental album IC-01 Hanoi, released later that same year.
