The FADER’s “Songs You Need” are the tracks we can’t stop playing. Check back every day for new music and follow along on our Spotify playlist.
Earlier this month, Los Angeles producer Benedek announced his new EP, and Apron Records debut, Zebrano with the release of the AKUA-featuring “In the Air,” a breezy late-summer jam powered by crisp drum programming and ethereal vocals. It’s a crystallized fragment of ‘80s pop meant to put you at ease.
“Emotional,” the EP’s second single, makes me feel like I’m digging through record store crates for long-lost New Jack Swing 7-inches. The song features L.A. singer Devin Morrison, whose throwback style matches Benedek’s dreamy nostalgic vision. “Emotional” smells like leather jackets and thick aquatic cologne. Morrison’s colorful and full of dramatics, but in this song, he sounds like he can’t even stand to look at the woman that's been playing him for a fool, crying out “You and all your schemes, no regard for my feelings.”
