From Shirley Ellis to Kitty Pryde, hip-hop's history is full of young female MCs making funny, pop-oriented talk raps that find a significant audience. Coco & Clair Clair are decidedly no small part of that lineage – songs like "Pretty" and "Pop Star" (which was premiered at The FADER last year) have generated tens of millions of streams for the Atlanta duo and led to tours with Turnstile and a collab with Clairo.
Today they're back with a new hit called "Cherub," the latest single from their upcoming project Sexy, which drops on November 4. Coco & Clair Clair are still the coolest girls in the party, issuing hilarious threats ("Fuck the NRA, but I'll blow your fucking house out / With a gun, baby") and poo-pooing haters on a hook with Marie Antoinette levels of disregard. As for the beat, I can't top Coco's description of it as a "Runescape-type beat," so I won't try.
“We both really wanted to show our capabilities,” Clair said of Sexy in a press statement. “Some songs, Coco raps so fast, which she's never done before. And some of the songs, I actually try to sing or I just talk. It was important to us that we tried new things and showcased what we can do. It’s still very much us, but it's new and fresh.”
