The FADER’s “Songs You Need” are the tracks we can’t stop playing. Check back every day for new music and follow along on our Spotify playlist.
Punk is not immune to platitudes. Half-hearted attempts at provocation or lazy throwbacks to the past can only be masked by aggressive sonics for so long before the music you're listening to becomes the picture of what the genre originally was created in part to push back on. Show Me The Body knows how to avoid all this. Since 2016 they've taken hardcore in their own direction, building a dedicated following while never presenting themselves as anything other than mortal.
"Loose Talk," their new single, opens up with a reflection that could act as a neat summary of the band's overarching lyrical themes. Over his tinny, distorted banjo strums, Julian Cashwan Pratt muses on the "furnace" of modern life, the weak overpowering the strong, and "the games that they play that they say will make you a man." The song blasts into a snarl of apocalyptic goth-rock where Pratt is the curbside prophet and, tellingly, the song's mantra is its most coherent line: "Love and respect / come and fuck with the set." In a seller's market for false dreams, Show Me The Body's advocating for real community is timely and perhaps even vital.
